PXR 2013 Blackpool |
Then troops filed in to the mess hall for another excellent meal. After the meal there was a break with tradition and there was an intermission to watch the second half of the FA Cup. Wigan totally and unexpectedly beat the very rich Manchester City. This made one of the comrades extremely happy, almost like a dog with two dicks. Wigan that season went on to be relegated from the top flight on English football and the result of the FA Cup final cost the City Manager his job – and that’s how unexpected the result was. After the football had finished the troops returned for the Mess Meeting. Maj John Haley made an excellent job of chairing the meeting, firstly welcoming the old comrades to the 2013 reunion. David Clark was formerly welcomed to 211 Old Comrades Club – he thanked everyone for the weekend and said he had thoroughly enjoyed it. The club is also expecting another old comrade to attend next year – John Hanna – which we are looking forward too. Toasts were made and particularly our thoughts were with absent friends, for those who were missing for whatever reason “ we will never forget them”.
Presentations were made; Brian Hogan - “Must Try Harder Award” – Plastic Bowls Dixie Dean – “What A Bright Boy Can Do” – The Book Brian Finland & Dave Perry – Competition Winners – Trophies The secretary presented his report and he agreed to stay as secretary for the Club on the condition that everyone paid their membership fees on time. Most paid there and then. The usual debate followed location for next year’s mission. After much debate it was decided that the first choice location for 2014 is a locality suitable for a group of timeworn troops – it was therefore decided that we should try Bournemouth, a place more suitable to our needs these days & where pensioners go! The troops started the evening activities, a range was on offer from the card schools, visiting local establishments, listening to the singer, pool activities, sleeping and there was one final test – Cpl Stewart with his recognition test. This was Gary’s laptop and his Thailand operations and the question to the troops was “is it, isn’t it” – I’m sure some of the troops are still interested in the answers. Even after troops had retired Cpl Stewart carried on the test with the bar person until the very early hours, returning troops all went to their accommodation leaving him to it. Sunday morning soon arrived and the Old Comrades got fed and watered then started fond farewells and departures in good time to avoid the Blackpool Marathon which passed Camp Manhatton and would have prevented departure.
Stewart, Dean & Perry stayed back and completed the tasks of the rear party, handing back accommodation and drinking more beer.
As for the mission set by Her Majesty, well the elections went as expected, UKIP got a few seats in Government, the country is still in a financial crisis, the immigration policy is pants, the agricultural policy well what can we say! |
The important thing is to recognise the bond and special affiliation between these Old Comrades, the Club is about true friendship between each other.
PS – sorry for delay in PXR, when got back the laptop packed in, then when I went back to the notes I couldn’t make sense of what I had scribbled and there was no chance of remembering as I can’t remember what I did yesterday these days. – I just hope it’s a real reflection of events!
